Everyone to the demonstrations at 12pm!
No corner of the planet escapes the environmental destruction to which the capitalist system condemns us. The terrible fires in Greece, Turkey, Siberia or California, the heat waves that have swept Canada and the east coast of the United States, leaving hundreds of deaths and millions of fish suffocated by oceanic warming, the melting of the Arctic territory – in early August the ice cap that covers Greenland lost approximately 8,000 million tons a day –, earthquakes in Haiti, floods in Germany, Belgium and China... This is the chronicle of a catastrophe that keeps advancing at an unstoppable rate.
The latest report from the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is devastating: “The scale of recent changes across the climate system as a whole and the present state of many aspects of the climate system are unprecedented over many centuries to many thousands of years.” However, climate change is not a divine punishment. It is the result of the capitalist mode of production’s destructive action on the ecosystem, and that of the complicity of governments that support the so-called market economy.
Climatic catastrophe, capitalist catastrophe
The responsibility that big companies and oligopolies hold in the destruction of the planet can no longer be hidden. The culprit behind this situation is not “humanity” in general, capitalists is: 20 fossil fuel companies generate a third of global greenhouse gas emissions and 100 multinationals emit 80% of CO2.
All governments, whether they identify as openly right-wing or social democratic, insist time and again that measures are being taken to curb climate change. What a despicable lie! Climate summits, from the Paris Agreement to COP25 in Madrid, have all failed because they are organized and controlled by the same ones that destroy the planet to line their own pockets.
Electricity, gas and oil companies, banks or the large textile and agri-food companies’ environmental statements and propaganda are a complete fraud. “Green" is in fashion in all their advertisements, but in reality, it is nothing more than a blatant trick to deceive the public opinion; cynical words to unload the weight of their criminal activity on the shoulders of the population, and passing the buck of their responsibility.
Here lies the logic of capitalism: maximising the profit of a few over paying attention to the human, social and environmental needs of the majority.
We must break with the system to save the planet: climate strike on 24-S!
The so-called ‘green capitalism’ is a real scam and has failed. Relying on the action of governments and companies to stop the disaster we are experiencing is a mistake. We can only rely on our own strength and our ability to fight and mobilize. The youth has proved it in these years and will continue to do so more powerfully.
For this reason, the Student’s Union calls all students to the global climate student strike on September 24 and we call them to empty all classrooms and fill the streets in the demonstrations that will take place at 12pm in the different cities throughout the Spanish state.
That day will once again be an impressive day of struggle, with millions of young people gathered in squares all around the world.
Only by putting an end to capitalist oppression, nationalizing large multinationals under the democratic control of the population, productive activity will then be planned to meet pressing social needs, guaranteeing health and public education, affordable and decent housing for everyone, no more precarious employment or poor wages, and remaining respectful towards the environment. Only with the socialist transformation of society will we be able to preserve the environment from certain destruction and achieve social and climate justice.
